Bearings
Jim Roberts
Bearings was commissioned by Sustrans as part of their Art in the Travelling Landscape project and takes the form of a cluster of dissected spheres in varying diameters. The spheres were juxtaposed forming an interesting feature, which combines aesthetics and function resulting in contemporary seating/shelter, which is protective without creating seclusion.
The spheres were manufactured from mild steel and all parts of the sculpture were hot-dip galvanised, etched primed and two packed lacquered. The spheres range in diameter from 1.5 metres down to 1 metre. The surface of the table or hemisphere, central to the cluster, was etched and welded with a variety of designs taken from the children’s ideas in workshops carried out in Harrowgate Hill Junior School.
