SHERWOODS VAUXHALL DARLINGTON 10KM

This year will be the 25th anniversary for Darlington’s 10km Road Race.   The annual race, which this year will be held on Sunday 12th August, has gone from strength to strength over the years.

We are delighted to once again announce Sherwoods as our headline sponsor for the tenth year, who this year are working in partnership with Vauxhall.  Highland Spring and The Northern Echo are both supporting us again this year and we are extremely pleased to welcome both Mizuno who are our sportswear sponsor and TFM Radio, who will be media partners for the first time.

Over the last 25 years the race has had several course changes but we are pleased to say that the changes made in 2009 remain in place this year. 

The major course change was in 2002 when the current two lap route was introduced and it enabled the race to be run over a completely closed route for the first time. This was also the year that the current men’s course record was set by Martin Scaife. The record stood until last year when Ethiopian Yared Hagos, knocked 15 seconds off it.

2012  is a huge sporting year  with London 2012 on the horizon and with this in mind , the 10km will have a slightly earlier start time of 10.00am. This will enable the majority of participants to be finished in time to watch the Men’s Olympic Marathon , which is scheduled to start at 11.00am.  All of the TV screens in The Dolphin Centre will be tuned in to the Olympic Marathon!

For this year’s race all 10km entrants will again receive personalised chip timing which means times will be recorded for each person when they cross the start and finish lines rather than from when the starting pistol sounds.  We also have a SMS text results service, which means we can supply everyone, who provides us with a mobile telephone number, with their race time and finishing position. There will be no junior 3km this year but there is a prize section within the 10km for young athletes aged 15 to 17. The 10km will, as always, be supported by our popular Family Fun Run, which is effectively open to everyone.
