Concessionary Travel Scheme

The concessionary fares scheme enables residents to travel either for free or half fare on bus services within the Borough. A voucher scheme operates for those that are unable to use a conventional bus service. The scheme is open to men and women 60+ and those that meet disability criteria.

Coronary Care Support Group

Affiliated to The British Heart Foundation. The 'core' meeting is held at 7-30pm on the 3rd. Tuesday evening of each month.  This meeting is designed to be both social and informative. Patients suffering from or recovering from Heart Disease or Cardiac Surgery are invited to attend along with Partner, Family and/or Friends.

DAISY (Darlington Active Independent Staying Young)

DAISY is a period of time during the summer when the warden services promote independent living and an active life in the sheltered housing schemes.

 

DAISY is specially designed for the over 50’s in Darlington and the surrounding villages to take part and join in the free activities, and all with free refreshments. Music, Art, Crafts, Social and Educational activities and competitions are on offer.

Exercise for the Over 50s

Sheltered Housing complexes have trained wardens who provide exercise classes designed to help improve your health, mobility and Social Life. 

 

GEM (Get Everyone Motivated) has approximately 250 local participants and everyone is welcome.  There are 20 locations throughout the Darlington area.

GOLD (Growing older, living in Darlington)

GOLD is a project designed to give people over 50 a say in Darlington. Not only are there task meetings where people can have their say about issues such as health, leisure and transport and GOLD get-togethers with speakers but there are also many social events.

Grandparents' Association

Gives advice and information and support to grandparents of children affected by a divorce or separation. It is the only national registered charity for grandparents in the country. The organisation aims to find creative solutions to this lack of contact - for both grandparents and grandchildren.

Handyperson Scheme

Run by Three Rivers Housing Group's Care and Repair Darlington Agency, this is an affordable home repair and adaptation service for Darlington residents who are over 60 or disabled.

Other vulnerable residents who can show that they are unable to do jobs themselves and have no one else to help, may also access this service.

LEAP Scheme

Lifestyle Enhancement Activity Programme (LEAP) is our GP Referral scheme. To join, just bring along a form from your doctor or Practice Nurse, then our fully qualified staff will suggest an individual programme for a healthier way of living.  It offers an alternative to the prescription of drugs for certain conditions and may ultimately reduce visits to your doctor.

NHS Walk in Centre

At the Darlington NHS Walk-in Centre you can recieve healthcare advice, information and treatment for minor ailments and advice on staying healthy. No appointments are necessary and you can remain anonymous.

Sheltered Housing

Sheltered Housing allows older people to live independently within their own home. The Council has 27 schemes providing 834 units of sheltered accommodation in different locations throughout the town and rural areas. All have a dedicated Warden, many of whom are residential. A wide variety of social activities also takes place in these schemes.
