Non Domestic Rates (Business Rates)

Owners of Business premises pay non-domestic rates on their property (this is like paying Council Tax on your home).  The rates are charged by and payable to the local authority.  The annual rate bill for a property is determined by multiplying the rateable value of the property with the rate in the pound.

Commercial Waste Collection

Darlington Borough Council provides a service to all businesses for the removal of Commercial Waste.  Eurobins of various sizes or a bag collection service tailored to individual needs can be provided.

The Business Support Service

The Council’s Economic Regeneration and Tourism Section works in partnership with a number of business support agencies and organisations to encourage businesses to start up and develop in Darlington.  Direct services include a range of financial incentives, vacant sites and premises register, company directory, signposting to other sources of support, workforce development and information on other Council services.

The Falchion Fund

The Falchion Fund is a unique loan scheme dedicated to new and existing businesses in the Borough of Darlington, which employs up to 250 persons. The aim of the Falchion Fund is to safeguard and support the creation of jobs in Darlington by levering additional sources of money into the setting up of new business and the development and expansion of existing business.

Morrison Enterprise Trust

Morrison Enterprise Trust is a registered charity and has been established for over eight years.  The Trust is based at Morton Park Business Training Centre on the Morrison Supermarket plc Site at Morton Park, Darlington.  The Centre provides a range of training and conference facilities.  It caters for small groups or conferences up to 150 people and has facilities to deliver a range of IT services. Any surplus generated from the Training Centre is directed back into the charity to help fund activities in Darlington, e.g. community enterprise initiatives and employment support for people with a range of disabilities.

NEL Fund Managers

NEL manages a number of investment funds, the biggest of which are the Capital North East (CNE) Fund and the third North East Investment Fund (NEIF3).  CNE provides equity funding from £25,000 to £250,000 and NEIF3 provides unsecured loans of between £15,000 and £250,000 to small or medium sized businesses in the North East of England.  Businesses can be existing or start up in almost any sector, although some restrictions do apply.

Rateable Value

An independent valuation officer of the Valuation Office Agency fixes the Rateable Value for each property, which is part of the Inland Revenue Service. The values of all properties are shown in the Local Rating List, a copy of which may be inspected at the Valuation Officer's Office or the Town Hall in Darlington

Unoccupied Property Rating

Non domestic properties which are unoccupied may be liable to empty property rates. Rates are charged at 50% of the full rate bill or of the transitional bill where transitional arrangements apply. Liability begins after the property has been empty for three months. Certain types of property, such as factories and warehouses are exempt from empty property rates.
