Many trees are protected against felling or overpruning, either by means of a Tree Preservation Order or by virtue of being situated in a Conservation Area. If a tree is protected by both means, then the Tree Preservation Order takes priority.
For felling or pruning of trees protected by a Tree Preservation Order, it is necessary to submit an Application to Fell or Prune Trees.
For felling or pruning of trees within a Conservation Area, it is necessary to submit a Notification to Fell or Prune Trees in a Conservation Area.
There is no fee required for these types of applications. See how to apply.
Further information on protected trees is provided by the Department for Communities and Local Government.
Please note that planting of trees does not normally require permission, unless it is part of a landscaping scheme.
