The Role of Planning Applications Committee and Sub-Committee

The Planning Applications Committee is made up of 13 elected members.  Its purpose is to make decisions on important applications.  These decisions will take into account the officers' reports and recommendations as well the views of the applicant and of interested and affected parties.  Planning applications that are considered by the Planning Applications Committee are normally those which are large, economically significant, contentious in nature, or where objections have been received by neighbours or from other affected bodies or organisations.

The Planning Applications Sub-Committee is made up of 5 elected members, all of whom are also Committee members.  Its role is identical to the main Committee, except that it deals primarily with householder applications.  Sub-Committee meetings will run in the early evening.

Please note that only a minority (around 15%) of all planning applications go to Committee or Sub-Committee.  The remainder of applications are delegated to the Assistant Chief Executive (Regeneration), to be decided in accordance with accepted policy and guidelines.

Attending Meetings & Submitting Your Comments

Meetings take place every 4 or 5 weeks, normally on a Wednesday afternoon.  Members of the public may attend.  The start time for Committee is normally 1:30pm.  The Sub-Committee start time can vary between 3:00pm and 5:00pm and is subject to alteration, so please check before you attend.

You can obtain copies of the officers' report and recommendations beforehand.  These are also available online.

If you wish to attend, the following document will be helpful:
