Online Services

Some of the suppliers listed above offer the facility to buy online and print out your purchased copies using your own printer.  For any maps obtained in this way, please note that it is illegal to print out more copies than you have purchased.  You will therefore need to purchase the required number of copies.

The Planning Portal provides a service which allows the site boundary to be drawn onscreen by the purchaser before supplying the map as a JPG file.  Several alternative sizes and coverages are offered.  Please select the "4-hectares" option if possible.

Other online mapping services may also be available.  If obtaining maps from other sources, please ensure that they are appropriate for their intended use as site location plans.  Please note that  Land Registry plans are not suitable.

Copyright Licences

Businesses possessing the appropriate licences are able to copy maps for their own purposes.  Ordnance Survey issues Copyright Licences to enable architects and other professionals to copy original mapping that they have purchased from OS map agents for the purpose of planning applications.  Copyright Licences can be obtained from the Copyright Licensing Department, Ordnance Survey, Romsey Road, Southampton SO16 4GU.  These can also be applied for online - see Ordnance Survey Copyright Licence Application.

All map extracts should clearly show an authorised copier's licence number together with the appropriate copyright acknowledgements.

Required Standards

Sometimes there are several options of different maps offered by map vendors.  If given a choice, the usual standard size, scale and coverage for a site location plan are as follows:

Size  –  A4
Scale  –  1:1250
Coverage  –  4 hectares (40,000 square metres)

For very large sites, 1:2500 scale may be more suitable.

Points to Note

  • If you are printing out copies of an electronic map, please ensure that they are printed at the correct scale.  Do not enlarge or reduce a map to fit a particualr paper size.

  • Aside from the site location plan, other plans submitted with an application are not normally required to be Ordnance Survey based.  For example, site layout plans may be hand-drawn or CAD-based (provided that they are drawn accurately and measurements indicated where appropriate).  Thus there is no requirement to purchase more than one set of maps, despite the variety of available options offered by some vendors.

  • Ordnance Survey maps are subject to copyright restrictions.
