Design of New Development Supplementary Planning Document

Supplementary Planning Document

The Design of New Development Supplementary Planning Document will set out detailed design guidance on the location, form and type of new development in the Borough to help achieve a high quality, distinctive, safe and sustainable, built and natural environment.  Once adopted, it will be used to help assess the quality of design in all planning applications.  The public consultation for this document is expected to start in Spring 2009.

Promoting High Quality Design in Darlington

In order to promote high quality design in future it is important that all the special features from Darlington’s heritage which contribute to the local distinctiveness of each neighbourhood or village, like rooflines, chimneys, sash windows and building materials is reflected in new design.

We have with the local community, looked at the special features of the Borough, specifically for the town centre, the distinct neighbourhoods within the urban area and the villages.  This work is being used to help set out detailed design guidance for the Borough and will be included in the draft Supplementary Planning Document.

If you would like to look and comment on the special features identified that contribute to Darlington’s distinctiveness, please go to our Design Quality account on the Flickr website [external website]
