Adoption of the Core Strategy
Darlington Borough Council formally adopted its Core Strategy Development Plan Document on the 6th May 2011. The Core Strategy sets out how the Borough will develop over the next 15 years (2011-2026), and forms part of the Local Development Framework for the Borough. The policies in the Core Strategy replace a number of policies in the Borough of Darlington Local Plan (1997) that were 'saved' under the provisions of Section 38 of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004. Adoption of the Tees Valley Minerals and Waste Core Strategy DPD and the Minerals and Waste Policies and Sites DPD
On 15 September 2011 the five local authorities in the Tees Valley - Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees adopted joint development plan documents (DPDs) under the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 to set out planning policies and site allocations on minerals and waste developments until 2026. Making Places and Accommodating Growth Development Plan Document Scoping Report
The ‘Making Places and Accommodating Growth DPD Project Scoping Report’ is the starting point for discussion and debate about what the document will include and what should inform its preparation. The consultation period ended on the 28th April 2011 and all the comments made will be taken into account in moving forward to the next stage of the process - the production of the Issues and Options report. Eastern Town Centre Fringe Area Action Plan (Development Plan Document)
Work has commenced on the Eastern Town Centre Fringe Area Action Plan. As part of the Local Development Framework this Action Plan, when finalised, will become part of the adopted development plan for the area. It will provide detailed policies and site allocations, and will be used to guide decisions on planning applications. Recent Publications
Revised Design of New Development Supplementary Planning Document
The revised Design SPD was adopted in July 2011. After the adoption of the Core Strategy in May 2011 limited consequential changes were needed to the 2009 Design SPD to make sure that it was consistent with the Core Strategy policies. These do not affect the overall approach set out in the SPD.

Updated Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (3)
The third annual update to Darlington's Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) was published in January 2012. This update builds upon the comprehensive assessment carried out in previous editions of the SHLAA.
