South Park Restoration Project
The Scheme
Darlington's South Park is the oldest public park in the North East and is listed in the English Heritage Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. A £3.9 million redevelopment programme has been established to restore much of the park to its former splendour. The scheme includes the restoration of the park's bandstand and fountain, lake restoration, new café and new education centre, play areas, the creation of a new skate park facility and the development of a new sensory garden area.
A tree maintenance programme of works was carried out in 2003 as part of the park's redevelopment programme and work on restoring and replacing railings around the park is underway. Work on the park is now nearing completion.
The South Park restoration programme is supported by the Heritage Lottery fund which has awarded Darlington Council £2.9 million, with the remaining cash to make up the £3.9 million cost coming from the Council, County Durham Environmental Trust (CDENT), the Training and Enterprise Council and other community and local partners.
