Protection and Control of the Built Environment

Urban Development

The built environment is continually changing and evolving.  A key role of the planning system is to protect the environment whilst enabling the development that is necessary for the economic and social well-being of communities.  Our planning team seeks to ensure that every new development is appropriate for its purpose and location and that the cumulative effects of different developments over time are not bad for Darlington.

Guidance for Prospective Applicants and Interested Parties

The Council encourages informal discussions about a proposal before an application is made.  These can help applicants to put forward suitable schemes that will stand the best chance of gaining approval.  Experienced and qualified staff are available to discuss your proposals or to provide information and guidance.

Interested parties who are potentially affected by developments are included too.  Businesses, neighbours and the public generally are all customers of the planning service.  All customers will be treated efficiently, positively, courteously and equally.
