Keeping Streets Clean And Safe

What Does This Service Offer?

Darlington Borough Council is responsible for the cleansing of:

  • Roads, footpaths, cycleways and verges
  • Shopping areas and car parks

Who Provides The Service?

Street cleansing in Darlington is carried out by the Council's Community Services Department who are located at Vicarage Road, Darlington.

What Can I Expect From The Service?

The Council is required to meet standards laid down in the Environmental Protection Act of 1990.

We will:

  • Sweep roads on a programmed basis
  • Litter pick on a programmed basis
  • Clean the Town Centre hourly during the working day
  • Clean neighbourhood shopping areas every day

How Quickly Will Street Litter Be Cleared Once It Is Reported?

Our response time will depend on where the litter is in the Borough and how much litter there is, so that we can give priority on a 'worst first' basis.

Should I Inform The Council Of Litter Problems?

We employ supervisors who will check that the standards are being maintained but it is also helpful if you notify us if there is a large amount of litter in any location throughout the town. Please contact our Customer Services line on 01325 388777

How Can I Help?

  • Please place your litter in one of the many litter bins located throughout the Borough
  • Please take your litter home and put it with your household waste if there is not a convenient litter bin nearby
  • Please do not put your household waste in street litter bins
  • Please use the special facilities provided at the Household Waste Site for scrap or dangerous waste such as used oil to prevent harm to the environment and others
  •  Please do not feed the pigeons in the Town
  • Fly tipping (dumping waste) is illegal. You can dispose of your refuse by using the refuse collection service or by taking it to the Civic Amenity Site at Drinkfield, Whessoe Road, Darlington.
