Residents Parking

In some areas of the town, local residents pay a fee that allows them to use resident parking spaces near their houses. Only persons with a permit may park in these areas.

Enforcement is carried out between 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Saturday including Bank Holidays.

Parking in one of these spaces without displaying a valid permit is an offence. There are a few exceptions to this rule, including parking by emergency vehicles and loading/unloading from vehicles to an adjacent property (this must be observed by a Civil Enforcement Officer).

If you are a tradesperson working at a house and there is no alternative parking call 01325 388799 (Monday to Wednesday 08:30am - 5:00pm, Thursday 9:30am - 5:00pm, Friday 08:30am - 4:30pm).

Permits are not issued to residents’ visitors. There are areas of unrestricted, limited time or Pay and Display parking available for non-permit holders in every street within the zone.

Applying for a permit

If you live within an area covered by the scheme, you can apply for a permit, although there will be a charge for the permit to cover administration costs.  You will be advised of the cost on application.

To apply for a permit you will need to go to the Customer Contact Centre at the Town Hall with the following documents:

  • V5 Vehicle registration document
  • Proof of residency (for example: a utility bill)

Once you have received your permit you will get sent a reminder a few weeks before the permit is due to expire telling you to renew.

Apply online

From January 2012 residents who have received a new permit or renewal letter will be able to use the Permit website [external link].

  1. Renew a Permit (If the vehicle has not changed)
  2. Request a replacement permit
  3. Cancel a permit

Instructions will be detailed on the permit letter.

Discretionary permits may be issued to carers of older people and/or indisposed residents. Application forms for this type of permit can be obtained by telephoning 01325 388799.
