Winter gritting FAQ

What is the difference between Priority 1 and Priority 2 routes?

Priority 1 routes are gritted first.

Priority 2 routes are gritted only in the case of extreme and prolonged icy conditions and after Priority 1 routes have been completed.

How much of the road network is treated?

The pre-treatment network mainly covers the main routes in to and through the town and does include all of the scheduled bus routes. This gives quite a large coverage of the total network, over 50%, and provides a treated route within a reasonable distance of residential areas.

When do you review the routes that get gritted?

The treated network is checked prior to the start of the winter season to see if bus routes have changed and amendments are necessary. When bus services are stopped this does not necessarily mean that we will stop pre-treatment as some routes are on main links to villages.

We do not change the pre-treated network part way through the season unless for engineering difficulties such as road closures.
