Motorists should always drive carefully and in accordance with the prevailing weather conditions paying particular attention to the following:
Your vehicle:
-
Always keep the windscreen and all windows clear of frost and ice.
-
Do not set off before the demister has cleared the inside of the windscreen.
-
Add a low temperature screen wash to the washer bottle.
-
Carry a de-icer spray in the vehicle. Stop (in a safe place) and use it as and when required.
-
Check that all lights and indicators are working, clean and free of ice and snow.
-
Check that all tyres have a good tread depth (legal minimum is 1.6mm) and have sufficient pressure.
-
Check, at an appropriate place, that your brakes are working correctly.
-
Check the battery is in good condition. If it isn't, have it replaced. Ensure you have enough fuel for your journey.
Your journey:
In general, unless your journey is absolutely necessary, please stay at home when advised to do so by the Police and the media.
-
If you have to travel try to set off earlier to allow for the need to drive slower.
-
Possible hold ups due to blocked roads.
-
Possible single lane traffic moving slowly.
-
When there is ice and snow on the road, you should allow a larger gap between you and the vehicle in front.
-
Brake, accelerate and steer more gently to avoid losing control of your vehicle.
-
Use dipped headlights.
-
Take enough clothing, hot food and hot drinks with you in case you become stranded.
-
Avoid high ground and remote areas where possible.
Personal safety:
Remember, driving in adverse weather conditions is much more tiring than normal. Always allow plenty of time for your journey including any breaks.
-
Let someone know your intended route and your expected time of arrival.
-
If possible, carry a fully charged mobile phone.
If you get into difficulty:
-
If you have to leave your vehicle make yourself visible to other road users.
-
If you are forced to abandon your vehicle, give the Police the details.
