Information for Employers

Darlington Borough Council Learning and Skills Team offers a range of training opportunities in a variety of vocations to give people the chance to gain useful on and off-the-job experience and training.

Apprenticeships will enable people to gain nationally recognised qualifications, whilst being employed and paid in their chosen environment.

Elev8 [pdf document] courses are designed to support and develop young people aged 16 – 18 to gain employability skills, personal development skills and work experience to progress to an Apprenticeship, further training or employment.

Employment Information - Apprenticeships

All learners will be employed for the duration of the course on a minimum wage of £2.68 per hour for a minimum of 30 hours per week.  All learners will receive a minimum of 20 days holiday per year and sign an Apprenticeship Agreement detailing the terms and conditions of their employment.

Apprenticeships

These programmes are delivered in Business Administration, Childcare, Health and Social Care, Site Joinery and Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair. They will last a minimum of 12 months and the learner will be employed for the entire course - they will receive a minimum of £2.68 per hour for 30 hours a week. The course will involve some in house training, but the majority of the programme will be based with the employer at the workplace.

Elev 8

These courses are offered to 16-18 year olds in Business Administration, Site Joinery and Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair. They last an academic year and enable the learner to complete a Level 1 Award / Certificate / Diploma in Employability, as well as  a number of accredited qualifications e.g. CSCS card, First Aid, Food Hygiene. The course involves classroom based lessons, workshop experience and work experience, as well as an opportunity to build on maths and English skills.

Traineeships

These are offered to 16-24 year olds in Business Administration, Childcare, Health and Social Care, Site Joinery and Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair. They last up to 6 months and enable the learner to complete vocationally related qualifications and industry related qualifications. The course involves classroom based lessons, workshop experience and work experience, as well as an opportunity to build on maths and English skills. We will need to secure employers prior to learners starting the course, as this is a funding requirement.

Diploma Courses

These are offered to 16-18 year olds in Business Administration, Health and Social Care, Site Joinery and Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair. They last an academic year and enable the learner to complete a Level 2 Diploma certificate in their chosen area. The course involves classroom based lessons, workshop experience and work experience, as well as an opportunity to build on maths and English skills.

Health and Safety/Equality and Diversity/Safeguarding

We will ensure that all learners undertake all the required Health and Safety, Equality and Diversity and Safeguarding training and are aware of the issues and importance of this in the workplace and learning environment.
