Year 09

What will Year 9 be like?

In Year 9 you will be faced with your first big decision: choosing the courses you are going to do for the next two years.

Boy reading book

Making an important choice like this may sound scary, but it can be exciting. It's your decision, but don't think you're on your own. Before you make your mind up, speak to as many people as you can - teachers, family and of course your Connexions Tees Valley personal adviser!

What courses should I choose?

You've no choice with some subjects; you have to do them. So in a way this limits your choices. You have to carry on with:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • A modern language
  • Design and Technology
  • Information and Communication Technology

But depending on what your school can offer, the fun bit is choosing from courses like:

  • Art and Design
  • Business Studies
  • Classical Studies
  • Construction and the Built Environment
  • Drama
  • Economics
  • Engineering
  • English Literature
  • Geography
  • Health and Social Care
  • History
  • Home Economics
  • Leisure and Tourism
  • Manufacturing
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Religious Education
  • Social Sciences

What help can I get from Connexions Tees Valley in Year 9?

You can expect to be involved in at least one group work session with your personal adviser. This may include an introduction to your school's career library.
Some young people may get a one-to-one interview with a personal adviser.
Your personal adviser will also be available at parents' evenings to offer help and advice.
