The Police

Police can stop you in the street if they suspect you of having broken or being about to break the law. They must tell you their name, station where they are based and the reason they stopped you. You can be taken to the station and questioned under certain circumstances and you can be prosecuted in a Youth Court. You do not have to answer any questions the police ask you unless you are arrested.

What to do if you are stopped

The best thing to do if you are stopped by the police is stay calm and not get abusive or angry. If you are arrested and you are under 17 you must have a parent or carer or other appropriate adult with you before you are questioned. Whatever your age you are entitled to speak to a free duty solicitor.

Can the police search me or my car?

The police can search you or your car if they think they will find stolen or prohibited items such as drugs or weapons. Before any search takes place, the officer must tell you his/her name and which police station he/she belongs to, what he/she is looking for and why you are being searched.

The police officer must make a written record of the search, and a copy of it is available upon request at the Police Station. If you are searched in public, the officer can only search your outer clothing. They may not remove any of your clothing if a person of the opposite sex is present.
