Building a Borough for the Future

There is every reason to be confident about the future of Darlington and its Town Centre – new businesses and investors remain interested in the town – a sure sign of confidence.

Central Park

The first phase of residential development at Central Park, which includes approximately 330 new homes and a high quality multifunctional open space, started in July 2013 and will be delivered over the next 10 years. The Council depot has been relocated to Yarm Road Industrial Estate.

Funding from ERDF and HCA, for a Business Growth Hub, which will provide supported and managed office accommodation for small and medium enterprises within the Tees Valley Enterprise Zone has been secured. Development of this facility is scheduled to commence in February 2014 and open April 2015.

Interest has also been expressed in developing a National Biologics Manufacturing Centre (NMBC) at Central Park within similar timescales to the Business Growth Hub. The discussions with the developer are underway.

Leisure Complex – Feethams Area

Planning permission has been given and work on a new leisure complex is due to start on the Council-owned Feethams area in September 2014.

The development will see the former bus depot site transformed into a nine-screen multiplex Vue cinema, 80 bedroom Premier Inn hotel and a range of bars and restaurants including Nandos and Prezzo. The site will be developed by Terrace Hill.

Riverside Location

Plans are being explored to redevelop areas along the river Skerne to ‘uncover’ the river from where it disappears under the road. Imagine a fantastic new riverside area with new shops, homes and restaurants.

The first development fronting on to the riverside will be the new office building to house the relocation of Department for Education from Mowden Hall. Enabling works have commenced, with building works progressing early 2014. The building is scheduled to be completed late December 2014 to enable occupation early 2015.
