Short Breaks

Short breaks may be needed for a number of reasons and can be described in a number of ways such as respite care, time out for a short break or short term care.

If you are unable to remain living independently at home for a short period of time you might require respite often in residential or nursing care.

Short term care in a suitable care home is provided for a number of reasons:

  • You are well enough to leave hospital but are not yet fully fit enough to go home.
  • You are recovering from illness
  • To give the person who cares for you a break from their caring responsibilities.
  • Professionals may need more time to complete a full assessment of your future support needs
  • You need more time to make important decisions about your future, for example find a suitable home to live.

Some of the support identified above may be available through Adult Social Care following an assessment of the person or carer's needs. You can find out more information about the assessment process

If you have been assessed as being eligible for social care funded support, a financial assessment will need to be carried out to see if you can get help towards the cost of your care. You can find out more information on the financial assessment
