North East Railways in World War One Pop Up Exhibition

The North East Railways in World War One project has seen a team of volunteers search through the archive at Head of Steam - Darlington Railway Museum and record over 9,000 railway men who enlisted in the First World War. This exhibition brings together the stories discovered during the research and highlights case studies of a small number of the 18,000 men who enlisted from the North Eastern Railway company as well as those who remained at home on war service.

Each pop up banner has been created to stand alone and each banner centres on one theme. The case studies in the exhibition cover individuals from all areas of the North Eastern Railway Company, from the Borders to Hull.

Exhibition Contents:

  • 6 x Single Pop Up Banners:
  1. Introduction
  2. Railway War Work
  3. Women and the Railway
  4. The Bentley Family
  5. More than Mud and Trenches
  6. Illustration of railway man going to the ‘Front’.
  • 1 x Double Pop Up Banner:
  1. Northumberland Fusiliers 17th (N.E.R.) Battalion.
