Murder by Gaslight

Murder By Gaslight Poster Small

A ghoulish audience with two of the most infamous poisoners in British history is on offer to visitors at the Head of Steam – Darlington Railway Museum.

The deadly doctors William Palmer and Harvey Crippen will be brought to life in a special performance of ‘Murder by Gaslight’ at the museum on Sunday 13 November, from 1pm. Presented by Don’t Go Into The Cellar! – a Victorian theatre company with bite – ‘Murder by Gaslight’ invites the audience to encounter the murderous men of medicine as the diabolical doctors regale you with their case histories and invite you to judge for yourselves whether they were in fact, guilty as charged!

Tickets for ‘Murder by Gaslight’ are now on sale, price £8.50 which includes light refreshments before the performance. The performance is most suited to adults and children over 12 and tickets are available from Reception by phone or in person during opening hours – Wednesday to Sunday 11am – 3.30pm.

A weekend of drawing at Head of Steam organised in collaboration with the North Yorkshire and South Durham Decorative & Fine Arts Society (NADFAS). Have fun helping to create big drawings that stretch the length of the platforms. Be inspired by the historic steam trains, travel memorabilia and the impressive Victorian architecture of the Station's interior. All ages and abilities welcome. Activities are free and art materials are provided. (Normal entrance fees for the Museum apply)

North East Railways in World War One Pop Up Exhibition

The North East Railways in World War One project has seen a team of volunteers search through the archive at Head of Steam - Darlington Railway Museum and record over 9,000 railway men who enlisted in the First World War. This exhibition brings together the stories discovered during the research and highlights case studies of a small number of the 18,000 men who enlisted from the North Eastern Railway company as well as those who remained at home on war service.

Each pop up banner has been created to stand alone and each banner centres on one theme. The case studies in the exhibition cover individuals from all areas of the North Eastern Railway Company, from the Borders to Hull.
