Training Tips

For training tips, schedules and advice on running in general go to Run Britain website [external link].  You can also follow our Basic Training Plan [pdf document], a 10 week training schedule.  Alternatively, you can join one of our two local running clubs - Quakers Running Club [external link] or Darlington Harriers [external link]

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I enter the 10km?
You can download the entry form [pdf] and send it to the address on the last page, or alternatively enter online [external link] - this does incur a small administration charge. You will receive your race information in the post.

Closing date for entries is Friday 4 August 2017, or when race capacity is reached. We no longer accept entries on the day of the race.

Do I have to belong to an Athletics Club to take part?
No - over half our entrants don't belong to a club.

Is there an age limit?
You must be at least 15 years old on the day of the race to enter the 10K.
The Junior 3km age arrange is 8 – 14 year olds.  There are no age limits on the family fun run.

If I enter in advance but cannot take part, can I have a refund or transfer my entry?
Unfortunately no refunds are available and whilst we do not encourage transfer of race numbers, if you do transfer a race number you must advise us in advance so we can amend the race entry database at eventsteam@darlington.gov.uk or contact Phil Haymer on 01325 406417.

Is the route suitable for wheelchair users?
We have been advised that our course may not be suitable for wheelchair users; however we’ve decided to allow wheelchair users and wheel-assisted entrants to enter. We simply ask you check the gradient is suitable to your ability [link to follow]. For more information email eventsteam@darlington.gov.uk or call 01325 406417.

We ask that entrants identify themselves by ticking the relevant box on the entry form, which makes us aware of your participation.  We will endeavour to line you up in a safe area for the start and we will start you slightly ahead of the main field.

Is there any traffic allowed on the route?
The route for all of the races is completely closed to all traffic except for the race vehicles and any emergency vehicles, which have priority over runners and may need to access the route.
Please be aware, that the 10km is over 2 laps so you may be required to move for the race vehicle and lead runners to pass and you may be required to move off the road and on to the footpath. (Please see below for road closures

Can I run for a charity?
You certainly can and ideally we would like you to support our two nominated charities which this year are Darlington Samaritans [external Link] and St Teresa’s Hospice [external link].  We do understand though that many people like to run in support of a charity or cause which is personal to them.  If you wish to donate please visit the Darlington Rotary Club Charitable Trust Page [external link].

I have never competed in a 10km race before, is there anywhere I can get training advice from?
You can download a Basic Training Plan [pdf document] or you can visit Run Britain [external link] which has lots of advice and information available. If you have never raced before it would be advisable to consult your doctor before beginning your preparation and consult a sports footwear shop for advice on the best running shoes for your running style. For additional local training sessions see our Sports Directory and search 'running'

Alternatively, why not join Run in Darlington (type Run in Darlington in our Activity Search box), parkrun [external link] or one of our local running clubs; Quakers Running Club [external link] or Darlington Harriers [external link]

I always listen to music on my mp3 player when I train, can I do this in the race?
Unfortunately the answer to this is no. If you are listening to music through an earpiece you will not hear any emergency vehicles, which may need to access the course. You will also not be aware of the race lead vehicle, which does pass many people because of the two lap nature of our course. Therefore, for safety reasons, we must insist on no personal music players and anyone not following this request could be disqualified.

Is there first aid and medical provision at the race?
We have comprehensive medical support for the event. We have two race doctors, one around the finish area and a mobile doctor out on the route. There are also St John first aiders around the course and a fully equipped treatment centre at the finish. You can assist us by clearly showing on the back of your race number any medical condition you may have.

Where are the best places to park on the day?
When you receive your race information you will find a car park map with all the key car parks shown; however, Bells Place and East Row car parking will not be available. Please be aware that car parking charges are in place in all council car parks on a Sunday.

More information about car parks in Darlington [link]

Is there somewhere I can leave my belongings?

There is a designated area at The Dolphin Centre where participants can leave their belongings. We must point out that all items are left at the owner’s risk.

How do I find out my finishing place and finishing time?

Every entrant in the 10km has a unique timing chip, which will record your start time and finish time and as such your finishing position. Results will be available at UKtimers [external link] on the day of the race and also at ukresults [external link] and on this website the next day. They will also be printed in The Northern Echo later in the week. We are also offering a free text service to every entrant who provides us with a mobile telephone number; the text will include both your ‘official’ race time and finishing position.
