John Street Cycle Route Complete

John Street Cycle Route Complete
14 July 2017

The final section of the Harrowgate Hill cycle route links John Street to Albert Road, passing under the Skerne Rail Bridge, which featured on the old £5 note. An additional link provides a route through from Northgate, near North Road Station, to the Skerne Bridge.

From town the route uses Valley Street before joining the River Skerne at John Street. Cyclists and walkers can continue along the river all the way to Rockwell Nature Reserve and Haughton or follow the signed Harrowgate Hill cycle route using quiet roads and cycle paths to the edge of Darlington and then all off Road to Newton Aycliffe.

The route features CCTV and ecologically sensitive lighting which directs light onto the path rather than onto the riverbank, and therefore does not disturb local bats and other wildlife.

Councillor Nick Wallis, Cabinet member for Transport for Darlington Borough Council commented, “The improvements offer a safe well-lit route for walkers and cyclists who travel into town from the north, the newly completed route also opens up opportunities for visitors arriving at North Road station to explore the history of the nearby ‘£5 note’ bridge on foot”.

The scheme is funded as part of Darlington’s Local Transport Plan, with funding from the Department for Transport. In addition funding has been provided from the Sustainable Access to Employment programme, funded as part of the Growth Deal secured by the Tees Valley Combined Authority.

Ben Houchen, Tees Valley Mayor commented, “This investment is the latest addition to the strong Tees Valley cycle network. The route improves connectivity for residents and businesses in the north of Darlington and delivers significant economic, social and environmental benefits to the town and wider Tees Valley”.

There will be a formal launch of the heritage site to celebrate the £5 note bridge, historic information boards and a new entrance feature on Northgate as part of the Festival of Ingenuity in September.
