Copy certificates

The Civil Registration of Birth, Deaths and Marriages commenced in 1837 and certified copies of entries may be purchased from 1837 onwards. Darlington Register Office only holds records of all Births, Deaths, Marriages and Civil Partnerships which took place in the Darlington District which includes any local boundary changes at the time of the event.

Where a person has been adopted the birth entry is no longer available from the register office where the person is born. All birth certificates for adopted persons can only be obtained directly through the General Register Office. Call 0300 123 1837 or visit the General Register Office website [external link]

Copy marriage certificates for a recent marriage

If you were married from 4 May, 2021 marriage registers have been replaced with a marriage schedule and marriage certificates are no longer issued on the day of the marriage.

After signing the marriage schedule at the wedding we will back capture the marriage schedule and enter the details onto the national electronic marriage register and issue copy marriage certificates.

Place of marriage How you will receive you marriage certificates

You can collect your marriage certificates from the register office on the first Tuesday or Friday following the marriage.

You can have your marriage certificates posted to you. They will be posted on the first Tuesday or Friday following the marriage. You should allow the post 14 days to receive the certificates.

Additional copies other than the two pre-paid certificates can be purchased using our online service or by post.

You cannot apply for certificates either on the telephone or in person at the register office if you have been married in a church or religious building.

Obtaining a copy of historic certificate

Copies of all entries recorded in the Darlington district can be purchased from Darlington Register Office either by using our online service or by post. You cannot apply for a certificate in person at the register office or by telephone.

Certificates applied at £11.00 by post or online will be posted 2nd class no later than 5 working days after payment has been received.

If you need a copy of a certificate urgently you can apply directly to the General Register Office by calling 0300 123 1837 or online at the General Register Office website [external link].

All birth entries where the person has been adopted are held centrally at the General Register Office. If you need a copy of a birth certificate where the person was adopted then you should apply directly to the general register office and not the register office where the birth occurred.

Search online for a birth, marriage or death certificate

All Births, Deaths and Marriages for the Darlington District are indexed on our website, accessible through our online searching facility or by contacting the office. We can only search for an entry two years either side of a year provided by yourself.

Please note that entry references from other sources (for example: St. Catherine’s Indexes) do not correlate to the numbering of our entries.

Anyone can purchase copies of an entry of another person, provided they can supply sufficient information for the entry to be identified and the Superintendent Registrar is satisfied that the reason for you obtaining the certificate is not to be used for a fraudulent purpose.

Religious Marriages

Where marriages have taken place in a church or chapel the register will not be deposited at the Register Office until it is completed.

If this is the case then further copies will need to be purchased from the incumbent (person at the church/chapel having custody of the register).

We strongly recommend that where you are trying to obtain a marriage entry which occurred in a church after 1980 please contact the Register Office to find out whether the register is at the Register Office or still with the Church. Certificates can only be produced from Registers in our custody.

Unfortunately we cannot refund any applications made for certificates for entries which are currently in the custody of churches.
