Support in custody

We understand that being in custody can be a difficult time. You will continue to receive support as a care leaver, and we will work with you to plan for your future and successful return to the community.

Your Personal Adviser (PA) will continue to support you while you are in custody.

They will:

  • work with the Prison Offender Manager to make sure they know you are a care leaver
  • keep in regular contact with you through visits, video calls, emails, or phone calls
  • advocate on your behalf to make sure your needs are understood and met

Staying connected

Your PA will stay in contact with prison staff using official communication systems. They will make sure the right professionals are working together to support you.

They will help keep communication clear and make sure services are coordinated around your needs.

Your Plan (Pathway Plan)

You will still have a Pathway Plan, which focuses on your future and independence.

  • Your plan will continue to be reviewed at least every 6 months, or sooner if your circumstances change
  • It will include support for you while in custody and plans for when you are released

Support while in custody

While you are in custody:

  • your PA may attend care leaver drop-in sessions in the prison, where available
  • different professionals will work together to provide you with the right support
  • you will be encouraged to engage in education, training, and programmes that support your development

Preparing for release

Before you leave custody, your PA will work with:

  • probation services
  • housing providers
  • prison staff

This is to make sure that everything is in place for your release, including accommodation, support, and access to services.

On the day of release

When you leave custody, your PA will:

  • make sure you have safe travel arrangements
  • support you to access your benefits and financial support
  • help you settle back into the community and reconnect with services

Your rights

It is important to remember:

  • being in custody does not remove your rights as a care leaver
  • you are still entitled to support, planning, and care

Your PA can also support you to access advocacy services while you are in custody to make sure your voice is heard.
