Street Friends

Street Friends is a volunteer-led initiative. Volunteers help keep people safe and supported within Darlington’s night-time economy.

When are we out?

Fridays and Saturdays 9pm to 2am

We patrol busy areas and provide a visible reassuring presence for anyone who may be vulnerable.

What do we do?

Our volunteers can provide a range of support. This can include;

  • checking on people's welfare
  • help people who may be intoxicated or distressed
  • offering basic first aid
  • helping individuals get home safely.

Their presence reduces risk and supports emergency services.

Medical Support

Street Friends are supported by Salus Medical who provide two trained medics. They are available on Fridays and Saturdays from 10pm to 3am.

They are able to:

  • assess and treat people on site where possible
  • help reduce pressure on hospital services for non-urgent cases.

In urgent cases, the team will contact North East Ambulance Services (NEAS). In some cases they may support safe transport to hospital where suitable.

Working together

Street Friends is a partnership approach including:

  • Darlington Borough Council
  • volunteers
  • health services
  • emergency services

This joined-up approach ensures people get the right level of care quickly and reduces demand on emergency services.

We want to create a safer and more supportive environment for residents and visitors.
