ECTs who started induction from 1 September 2021

ECTs who started their induction from 1 September 2021 will follow a 2 year induction period underpinned by the Early Career Framework [external link].

See the statutory induction guidance [external link] for further information.

With the introduction of the early career framework, ECTs will follow a specific induction programme of training and support through your school / college.  Our Local Authority induction programme has been updated to reflect this and starts with a welcome briefing in September and then each term we will offer a training session and a network meeting.  Please see our ECT Induction Programme 2021-22 [pdf document] for full details.

Please discuss our induction programme with your Induction Tutor.  All ECTs will receive meeting invitations via email for the termly training sessions network meetings.  Please either accept or decline these meeting invitations so we know how many of you to expect.

Early Career Framework

With the introduction of the early career framework, ECTs will follow a specific induction programme of training and support through their school / college. There is a range of support available to ensure schools / colleges can meet this requirement, including a new funded programme of training and support. Statutory induction guidance sets out the responsibilities of school leaders, induction tutors, and mentors, to support ECTs undertaking statutory induction.

Changes include:

  • the extension of the induction period to 2 school years
  • ECTs undergoing induction are entitled to a 2-year training and support programme based on the Early Career Framework

There are 3 options for schools / colleges to choose from to deliver an Early Career Framework induction programme. More information on the Early Career Framework and options for schools / colleges [external link]

Before employing an ECT for statutory induction, schools /colleges must make sure that:

Registering your ECT for induction

Schools and colleges with an ECT are required to follow a 2-step registration process.

  1. First, details of the ECT and Mentor need to be registered with the DfE online service. Please note that this does not officially register the ECT for induction as Appropriate Bodies are required, by the Teaching Regulation Agency, to register an ECT as starting induction.
  2. Next, schools and colleges are required to register their ECT with an Appropriate Body. To register your ECT with us as your Appropriate Body, please complete and return our registration form [word document] to [email protected] before the dates below. This is a legislative requirement of the Teaching Regulation Agency and any delay to the registration may result in the ECT having to undertake a longer induction period.

Dates for registration forms to be submitted to [email protected] are:

  • September 2021 ECTs - registration forms submitted by Friday 1 October 2021
  • January 2022 ECTs - registrations forms submitted by Friday 4 February 2022
  • April 2022 ECTs - registrations forms submitted by Friday 13 May 2022

Progress reviews and formal assessments

  • ECTs should receive 2 formal assessments during their 2 year induction; an assessment midway through induction and a final assessment at the end. Based on a full-time ECT, a formal assessment should be completed towards the end of term 3 and the final assessment should be completed towards the end of term 6.
  • The Induction Tutor is expected to review the ECT’s progress against the Teachers’ Standards [external link] throughout the induction period, with progress reviews taking place in each term where a formal assessment is not scheduled.
  • Please send completed progress reviews and formal assessments to [email protected] as per the dates below.
  • If your ECT leaves the school / college before completing the induction period, you must complete an interim assessment to make sure that the induction can be continued effectively in any subsequent post.

The dates below are based on a full-time ECT who started their 2 year induction on 1 September 2021. For dates for ECTs who started their induction part-way through the year or are part-time, please contact [email protected]
