Newly qualified teachers
Welcome to Darlington Local Authority’s page for Newly Qualified Teachers, Induction Tutors and all those who support the NQT Induction process in schools.
Here you will find essential information, details of our training programme and support for NQTs as well as a useful bank of guidance documents and frequently used forms required throughout the induction period.
To become a fully qualified teacher in England, you must, by law, have satisfactorily completed a period of induction. The induction process has to be quality assured by an 'appropriate body', which in Darlington is the Local Authority. We act as the 'appropriate body' for all schools, as well as schools outside of Darlington.
As an 'appropriate body', we have a number of statutory functions that we have to fulfil related to the induction process for NQTs, which include making sure Headteachers and Governing Bodies are doing what they should be and that the NQT's development is being monitored properly.
The full list of statutory functions is detailed in Section 5 (paragraphs 5.7 to 5.10) of the Induction for Newly Qualified Teachers Statutory Guidance Induction for NQTs (England): Statutory Guidance for Appropriate Bodies, Headteachers, School Staff and Governing Bodies (2012) [external link]
