Electoral Review 2025
The Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) commenced an Electoral Review in Darlington in May 2025. The review is being carried out to ensure that each councillor represents about the same number of electors, and that the wards they represent reflect community identities.
The first part of this Electoral Review was to decide on the number of councillors that Darlington Borough Council should have. The LGBCE has recently informed us that they have decided that Darlington Borough Council should have 41 councillors. This is a change from the current council, which has 50 councillors. This change will come into effect at the 2027 Local Government (Borough) elections.
The second part of the review is to decide on the boundaries for the new council wards for Darlington, and the LGBCE wants to hear people's views on where they live to help make sure that the new wards reflect the size and shape of local communities.
The initial consultation on this stage of the electoral review will last of ten weeks and closes on 2 February 2026. The commission will use local views to help draw up their proposals for new ward boundaries. There will be a further round of consultation once the commission has drawn up their proposals. The second stage of the public consultation is expected to start on 5 May 2026.
