- What to do if I see a straying dog?
- Blanket and towel donation
- Food donation
If you lose your dog please immediately report this to us on 01325 406999. Once you have done this, please also feel free to report it on our Facebook page [external link].
We can then confirm if the dog has already been picked up or the dog warden will look out for the dog during his daily patrol.
If you lose your dog out of working hours (after 5pm weekdays and weekends) please call 01325 406999 to check if your dog has been brought in by a member of the public.
You can also call Deerness Kennels [external link] which is our designated kennel on 0191 3780439
It is also be a good idea to phone around the local vets [external link] in case your dog has been handed in.
If your dog is wearing an ID tag and is microchipped this will help us identify your dog sooner.
If you find a stray dog, you are required by law to return it to the owner or to contact our dog wardens on 01325 406999 or report it on our Facebook page [external link].
If you find a stray dog outside of normal office hours (after 5pm weekdays and weekends) please call 01325 406999 for advice (please note there is no collection service, although we do offer a kennelling facility). Alternatively you can keep the dog until the next working day and contact the dog warden. If the dog is injured it should be taken to the nearest vets as soon as possible.
If you wish to keep the dog, you must have written permission from us, and you will have to keep it for at least 28 days at your own expense.
One of the best ways to ensure that you and your dog are reunited is to microchip the dog. Please note that by law your dog also needs to wear a collar and identity tag.
A tiny microchip (the size of a grain of rice) is painlessly inserted in the skin at the back of the dog’s neck. This has a unique code number which is entered onto a national PetLog computer database together with the owner’s name and address. If the dog is found, a scanner is passed over the microchip and the owner can be identified.
Remember to notify PetLog if you change your details on 0870 6066751.
If you see a dog straying during office hours (between 9am and 5pm) please contact the dog warden team on 01325 406999. We will then endeavour to visit the area and try to seize the dog.
Although we are on Facebook, we can't check it regularly through the day as we are out on patrol so we'd recommend using the number above to let us know about any strays that you see.
If you have any clean blankets and towels you do not need, please drop them off with us. We use them to make bedding for stray dogs to keep them warm and snug when they are in our care. You can drop them off at the Central House Annex office on Gladstone Street. Unfortunately we can't accept duvets, sheets or clothing.
If you are buying food for your dog, please consider buying an extra tin or bag. We are collecting food for dogs in the area. The food we collect will go to both Deerness Kennels, and Kings Church in Darlington, to help people who have a dog and are finding it difficult to feed them.
Please drop your donation off at Central House annex office on Gladstone Street, ASDA at Whinbush Way, Wilkinson's at East Street OR Sainsbury's on Victoria Road.
