Heritage at risk

Describes heritage assets in poor condition. Their deterioration threatens their conservation, if not addressed.

Heritage can be at risk for many reasons.

For example;

  • vacancy,
  • lack of use,
  • removal of original features,
  • poorly executed alterations.

English Heritage [external link] collect data about the condition of;

  • scheduled monuments,
  • listed buildings graded I and II,
  • churches,
  • conservation areas.

It includes all grades of listed buildings and conservation areas.

Conservation areas at risk

Historic England [external link] collects data each year from local planning authorities on the condition of their conservation areas.

Darlington currently has three conservation areas that are at risk.

These are:

  • Northgate.
  • Victoria Embankment.
  • West End.
