Working Safely During Covid-19

The government has produced guidance to help employers, employees and the self-employed to understand how to work safely during the coronavirus pandemic. It has been updated to reflect industry feedback, as well as guidance on Test & Trace, safer travel and managing security risks. Visit the .Gov coronavirus updates page [external link] for more information.

There is a general guide [external link] providing practical actions for businesses to take based on 5 main steps.

  1. Carry out a COVID-19 risk assessment
  2. Develop cleaning, hand washing and hygiene procedures
  3. Help people to work from home
  4. Maintain 2m social distancing, where possible
  5. Where people cannot be 2m apart, manage transmission risk

There are also 14 guides [external link] covering a range of different types of work. Many businesses operate more than one type of workplace, such as an office, factory and fleet of vehicles. You may need to use more than one of these guides as you think through what you need to do to keep people safe:

  • Close contact services
  • Construction and other outdoor work
  • Factories, plants and warehouses
  • Heritage locations
  • Hotels and other guest accommodation
  • Labs and research facilities
  • Offices and contact centres
  • Other people's homes
  • Performing arts
  • Providers of grassroots sport and gym/leisure facilities
  • Restaurants, pubs, bars and takeaway services
  • Shops and branches
  • Vehicles
  • The visitor economy
