Community litter pick at Whinfield
Housing Officer Sophie and the Tenant Involvement Officer recently teamed up to carry out a community litter pick in the Whinfield area.
Taking pride in our neighbourhoods is important. Litter picking is a great opportunity to help keep the local environment clean, tidy and welcoming for residents. Throughout the session, several bags of litter were collected from streets, green spaces and communal areas.
The initiative not only helped improve the appearance of the area but also shows our commitment to working alongside residents to create neighbourhoods that everyone can enjoy and be proud of.
Sophie said:
"Small actions can make a big difference. By spending a little time litter picking, we've helped improve the local environment and shown our commitment to keeping Whinfield a clean and pleasant place to live."
The litter pick is just one example of how we continue to support our communities and encourage pride in our neighbourhoods.
Summer event at Havelock
On Tuesday 28th July the Havelock Centre hosted the Housing Teams latest engagement event.
Teams at the event included our;
- Housing Tenancy Management
- Income Team
- Lifeline
- Civic Enforcement
- Move More Team
The tenants were asked to complete surveys about their area, what they though went well and areas for improvement. It was a fantastic opportunity to get together and for our residents to learn more about the services that we can offer.
Before the event there was an estate inspection and a litter pick, helping identify improvements and to keep the area clean and tidy.
Housing Officer Charlotte said:

Going the extra mile for our customers
A routine repair turned into a memorable experience for one of our youngest residents thanks to the kindness of Community Services staff, Shaun and his colleague.
The team attended a property to complete works around a manhole cover and completed the works to a high standard. The resident praised them for their professionalism and quality workmanship.
However, it wasn't just the repair work that made an impact.
During the visit, Shaun and his colleague took the time to chat with Jordan, a young member of the household. Their friendly and approachable manner immediately put him at ease, and Shaun went above and beyond to make the day special. He spent time chatting with Jordan and even invited him to sit in the van and sound the horn, creating a moment of excitement that Jordan won't soon forget.
The customer said:
"Shaun and his colleague were brilliant throughout, professional, friendly, and genuinely thoughtful. Shaun specially made Jordan's day. He took the time to chat with him and even let him sit in the van and beep the horn. It really meant so much. I think they may even have gained a new friend because Jordan really didn't want to get out of the van!"
This feedback highlights how excellent customer service is more than completing repairs. Small acts of kindness and genuine customer care leave a lasting impression.
We are proud of the strong partnership we have with Community Services, whose teams consistently demonstrate our shared commitment to providing an excellent service for customers. Stories like this remind us that every interaction matters and that great customer service goes beyond the task itself.
A huge thank you to Shaun and his colleague for representing Community Services and the council so positively.
Darlington Housing Services enjoys successful day at Darlington by the Sea
Housing Services were delighted to attend this year's Darlington by the Sea event, joining residents and community partners for a fantastic day of fun, conversation, and engagement.
The event gave staff chance to meet residents, talk about services we provide, and listen to what matters most to our communities. Throughout the day, staff spoke with a wide range of residents who shared their experiences, ideas, and suggestions. This helps us to understand the needs and priorities of those we serve.
The feedback received was very positive. Many residents took the time to discuss the issues that are important to them and offer suggestions on how services can continue to improve. This is vital in helping Housing Services shape and deliver services that reflect the needs of local people.
As well as gathering feedback, the event was a great chance to build relationships, answer questions, and raise awareness of the support available to residents. The team welcomed the chance to engage with so many people in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.
We would like to extend thanks to the organisers, volunteers, and everyone who attended for making the event such a success. We look forward to working with residents to help build thriving communities across Darlington.
Housing and Lifeline receive warm welcome at Gold Tea Dance
Housing and Lifeline staff were delighted to attend the Gold Tea Dance. They had the chance to meet residents, share information, and promote the valuable support available through the Lifeline service.
The event was a huge success. Many people stopped by to chat with the team, ask questions, and learn more about how Lifeline can help people remain safe, independent, and connected in their own homes.
Residents showed great interest in the service. They welcomed the chance to discuss the support available for themselves, family members, and friends.
The Housing and Lifeline team enjoyed engaging with the community in such a positive and relaxed setting. This helps build relationships with residents and raise awareness of the services on offer.

Housing Services supporting Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness Week
Housing Services were pleased to take part in Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness Week (29 June – 3 July). This was a great opportunity for community engagement and positive talks with residents.
The various events across the town allowed the Housing Team to work alongside the Civic Enforcement & ASB Team and the Dog Warden Service. Together they gave advice, listened to concerns and talked about the support available to tackle anti-social behaviour in their communities.
Residents spoke about a range of issues including off-road bikes. The event raised awareness of how and where to report issues.
One resident said ‘that it was a great place to live, they have no issues and it was great to see staff in the area.’
Another tenant at Morrisons North Road shared ‘the area I live in is relatively quiet and if I do have an issue, I know I can speak to my Housing Officer.’
A resident from Firthmoor stated, ‘they had seen Anti-Social Behaviour and weren’t sure what to do, so it was great to now know who to report it to.’
A tenant spoke with the team at Dolphin Centre and said, ‘I phoned through to Housing, and a Housing Officer came out the next day to speak about an issue with a neighbour – they really listened to me and put my mind at ease.’
ASB Prevention Officer Jackie said ‘the week has been a great success, with excellent engagement from residents and businesses, alongside fantastic support from our partner agencies.’
The week also brought together a range of partners, including Durham Constabulary, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office, local councillors and other housing providers. Working together helps create safer and stronger communities.
