Work experience

At Darlington Borough Council we are passionate about giving people the opportunity to learn about job requirements, understand your interests and strengths and how certain knowledge, interests and skills can link to different jobs.
Work experience can really benefit young people, career changers and people returning to the workplace after a break and could include, volunteering, work shadowing and internships.

Step 2b – Unable to agree
If we’re unable to accommodate the request, there any other ways we may be able support, eg:
- Sharing other ways you may be able to gain experience
- If your interest is related to your school, college or university, we may arrange a meeting with your learning provider to discuss other ways to share experience including class talks, sharing a project for their completion, conducting practice interviews etc.
Step 3 - Health and Safety
The Council has a duty of care toward its volunteers/work experience and as such must take all reasonable steps to ensure their safety. There are also duties on employers under section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to take account of the health and safety of those people (other than their employees) who may be affected by their activities, and to give them relevant health and safety information.
If you are engaged on a placement with the council, you must comply with our processes and protocols.
