Crown Street Library Trustees

Get more involved with our libraries

We are planning to hold meetings for people who want to get more involved in talking to us about the town’s libraries.

We are looking at holding meetings about every three months, or at times when there are particular things to discuss. The first meeting will be on Wednesday 22 January 2020 at 4.00pm in Crown Street Library. Everyone will be welcome.

Could you be a Crown Street trustee?

Crown Street library was left to the people of Darlington in 1885, using funds from the estate of Edward Pease. It is recognised as a building which is held on Trust by the Council to be used as a public library.

Currently the council is the only trustee, but we want to appoint up to three independent trustees for the Crown Street library building. The move to appoint independent trustees is formal recognition of the fact that this is the people’s library.

As long as the Council is committed to maintaining the Crown Street building and using it as a public library the role is not likely to be an active one. However, if there are concerns about the repair of the building or concerns that the building will no longer be used as a public library, then the Trustees will need to meet. More details are available from the Appointment of Independent Trustees information document [pdf document]

Being a trustee also carries with it legal responsibilities and an appointment will need to be formally made by the Council. Further information about the legal responsibilities of trustees is available from the .gov website [external link]

You will not be able to become a trustee if you have been convicted of certain types of offences (these include if you have previously been disqualified from being a trustee or director or have been declared bankrupt). Before appointment you will be required to complete a declaration [pdf document]

If you are interested you will need to fill in a short application and be interviewed by a couple of members of the Council.
