Are you interested in health issues? If so, why not come along to the health group to find out more and to have your say?

There is usually a health related speaker at the beginning of the meeting and members of the group give their views and ask questions of every speaker.

Recent work by the group has included:

NHS help cards
The group undertook their own research into the NHS Help Card and produced an overview report [pdf document]

Dignity in care
Our members are very interested in promoting dignity and respect in care services. There has been a lot of coverage lately about how things can go wrong. We know that there are many services providing excellent care. We want to make sure all care staff can work to offer maximum dignity and respect.

We have developed a training course and are giving this to small groups of care staff. The training is accredited at Level 2 with the Open College Network. There is a small charge to the employer. We’re continually looking for new volunteers to give the training. You don’t need to be experienced in training, as we will give training and advice on that. We do this as experts in how we feel dignified and respected. If you would like to know more, please get in touch.

GOLD standards framework
The group was asked to carry out some evaluations of care homes in Darlington to establish standards. The care homes they visited were all taking part in a national training programme called the Gold Standards Framework, which has a strong focus on dignity in care and care at the end of life. They drew up individual reports for each home, which is confidential to them and produced an overview report [pdf document] which gives details of the findings that the volunteers felt were most important and those that came up in more than one home. This was repeated a year later and there is a second overview report (see NHS help cards)
