Pavement café policy

A Licensing Committee meeting on the 8 March 2022 approved a draft revision of Darlington’s pavement café policy for public consultation.

Draft pavement cafe policy [pdf document].

Pavement cafes can add to the vibrancy of both the day and evening economy of the town centre.

Well operated pavement cafes are attractive venues for families to enjoy refreshment and add to the ambiance of the town centre.

They became a key part of the hospitality trades recovery as covid restrictions were gradually lifted and became very popular in the town.

One key proposed change to the policy is that smoking will be prohibited.

Anyone wishing to comment on the policy can do so by e-mailing the Licensing Department at [email protected]

The consultation will end on 1 May 2022 after which any comments will be taken into consideration by the licensing committee.

Only when the licensing committee approve of the new policy will it be referred to full council for authorisation.
