Polling Districts, Polling Places and Polling Station review 2014
Why are we reviewing our Polling Districts, Polling Places and Polling Stations?
As the last review in Darlington was completed in 2011, a review is now due, and will take place in advance of the Local and Parliamentary Elections in May 2015.
The initial stages of the review will focus on the existing warding arrangements for Darlington, however will latterly consider the new electoral arrangements for Darlington, proposed by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE), who have recommended a reduction in the number of wards within the Borough. The new electoral arrangements will come into force at the local elections in May 2015.
What are Polling Districts, Polling Places and Polling Stations?
Polling Districts are the areas into which council wards are divided, and Polling Places are the locations of buildings in which Polling Stations are established. When deciding which buildings to use as Polling Places, the Council strives to ensure that they are located as conveniently as possible within the Polling District, and that they are accessible to everyone, particularly anyone who is disabled.
How long will the review take?
The review was scheduled to last eight weeks, and commenced on Monday 1 September 2014.
From Monday 1 September 2014 until Friday 19 September 2014, we consulted on our existing Polling Districts, Polling Places and Polling Stations. We invited views from community groups, organisations, head teachers, elected representatives, and from any person or body with expertise in access for people with any type of disability. We would also encouraged anyone entitled to vote in Darlington to make representations, let us know about any issues with current polling stations, and provide suggestions for alternative venues.
We also inspected existing and proposed Polling Places to ensure that they fulfil the criteria for Polling Places and Polling Stations, as identified by the Electoral Commission.
Between Monday 22 September 2014, and Friday 27 September 2014, we reviewed our findings and formulated further draft proposals based on responses received from the initial consultation and inspection reports. At this stage we also considered the Polling Districts, Polling Places and Polling Stations for the new warding arrangements.
A further consultation exercise on these revised proposals took place from Monday 29 September 2014 until Friday 10 October 2014, with finalised proposals being drafted between Monday 13 October 2014 and Monday 27 October 2014, for submission to Council on Thursday 4 December 2014.
How can I get involved?
During our initial consultation exercise, we received 15 representations [word document] regarding our Polling Districts, Polling Places and Polling Stations. Taking these representations into consideration, we reviewed our findings and formulated draft proposals. We also gave consideration to the Polling Districts, Polling Places and Polling Stations for the electoral arrangements which are scheduled to come into being in May 2015.
