Covid Business support tops £33m in Darlington
More than £33m has been paid out to local businesses to help them survive the difficult trading conditions caused by the pandemic. Applications for grants continue to flood in with the most recent round of grants attracting more than 300 applicants within a week.
Teams across the council are working flat out to deliver the support provided by central government. The grants have been offered in stages across different lockdowns and to a range of businesses that saw their profits tumble and doors close as lockdown restrictions came into force.
The most recent round of grants has seen even more businesses qualify for support as the criteria was expanded to allow for mobile businesses such as hairdressers, dog groomers and walkers, event specialists and wedding photographers for example, to claim help.
In addition, one-off grants of £500 are now on offer to self-employed licensed taxi-drivers, registered childcare providers and approved driving instructors.
Here’s a snapshot of the support given so far:
• 1735 Small Business Grants amounting to £17,350,000
• 364 Retail, Hospitality & Leisure Grants amounting to £6,520,000
• 105 Discretionary Grants amounting to £1,170,000
• 3,374 Local Restriction Support Grants amounting to £8,146,214
Total Grant Value: £ 33,186,214
Councillor Alan Marshall, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for economy, said:
“This is an incredible amount that has provided a much-needed boost to help our local businesses get through what must be the most challenging trading period we have endured in decades. Well done to the teams who have worked behind the scenes to administer the grants.
“I urge any local business who has not accessed support to visit our web pages. The criteria has recently been extended and they might now qualify for help. A programme of free online business support courses is also available and ongoing support from our #LoveDarlo Facebook page and Enjoy Darlington website.”
