Town centre resurfacing work to start

Town centre resurfacing work to start
04 March 2021

A section of Stanhope Road will be closed later this month for resurfacing work.

The closure, from Monday 22 March to Thursday 1 April, will affect Stanhope Road, Langholm Crescent, Larchfied Street, Northumberland Street, Coniscliffe Road and West Street.

There will still be access to businesses on Coniscliffe Road with any changes, and all diversions, signposted.

Northumberland Street will only be accessible from Grange Road and there will be traffic lights to control the flow of vehicles in the area.

The work has been timed to ensure the roads are resurfaced in times for businesses reopening  following Covid-19 restrictions.

Councillor Andy Keir, cabinet member for local services, said: “We have worked hard to ensure this resurfacing can be done before non-essential shops reopen so disruption for businesses is kept to a minimum.

“Inevitably there will be some disruption for people living and working in the area and I would like to thank everyone for their patience. We are committed to repairing and maintaining our road network and have plans to spend £2.75m on maintenance in the coming year, including innovative recycling projects to reuse existing road materials which would normally go to landfill therefore reducing our carbon footprint."
