Join us as we welcome a historic infantry regiment which is set to march through the  town centre for a Freedom of the Borough parade next week.

The Rifles, the successors to the Durham Light Infantry, was awarded Freedom of the Borough in 2010 and will be welcomed as its Band & Bugles parades through the town on Friday 1 July.

The Freedom of the Borough is the highest civic distinction that can be conferred upon an individual or collective body in recognition of outstanding service or particular civic association.

The Mayor Anne-Marie Curry will officially welcome the regiment to the borough, along with other local representatives. Local residents, schools, businesses and other organisations are also encouraged to come along to show their support as the regiment marches by.

The Mayor said: “The Rifles have a long association with Darlington, and we’re delighted to welcome them back. The parade will give us all an opportunity to express our thanks to those who serve as troops.”

Brigadier Mark Wilson MBE, of The Rifles said: "Although The Rifles is a nationally recruited regiment, we never forget our roots. We are honoured to hold the Freedom of Darlington and proud to have riflemen from Darlington serving within our ranks.”

The Rifles are coming to Darlington on Friday 1 July, and starting at 11am, the regiment will march down High Row to the Market Square.
