Discover Darlington – free trail app launched
23 October 2023

Residents and visitors are being encouraged to discover Darlington by downloading a new free app exploring the town’s heritage.

Taking users on a journey through the town centre, Darlington Trails offers a unique insight into the area’s rich history which is built on steam power and the determination to change the world.  Currently covering 14 locations of historic significance, including St. Cuthbert’s church, the market cross and the Joseph Pease memorial statue, the app gives users the opportunity to take a tour of the town and learn about its evolution from a small Anglo-Saxon settlement to the vibrant, cultural and economic business hub of today.

Developed by the council, in partnership with Discover Brightwater, the app, forms part of wider work to restore, reveal and celebrate life around the River Skerne which is being funded by National Lottery players as part of the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The accessible, immersive experience, has audio commentary and features photographs from the past and present. Based on an existing trail leaflet, and heritage research undertaken by The Northern Echo and Darlington Centre for Local Studies, the app offers people visiting Darlington the opportunity to discover the town and unearth many of our hidden gems.

Chris McEwan, cabinet member for economy, said: “Darlington is well placed for people to stay when visiting the regions many attractions. Trail apps such as this offer a real opportunity for our tourist economy, encouraging people to spend more time in the town, discover local businesses and make the most of our leisure opportunities.

“The app is also a great resource for local people and families, offering a free activity which will help to boost footfall in the heart of the town-centre. It also can be used by schools and colleges to bring history to life and acquaint young people with Darlington and all we have to offer.”

You can download the app for free by searching ‘Darlington Trails’ in the app store on your android or IOS device.
