Gypsies and Travellers in Darlington Borough

Darlington has a long association with Gypsies and other Travelling groups.

The Darlington Local Plan 2016-36 makes provision for travelling groups at the existing larger council owned sites together with other smaller, often private, sites within the Borough.

There are currently 138 pitches in Darlington Borough and 24 transit pitches.

The Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment Update 2017 [pdf document] reported that:

• Darlington Borough is well catered for in terms of supply of pitches.
• An annual need of 1 pitch per 5 years was identified from 2017-2022.
• Further need has arisen for 2022-2037. It is estimated that 46 pitches are needed, which equals 3 pitches per year.
• A need for 6-8 plots for Travelling Showpeople has been identified in the Local Plan period until 2037.
