Public space protection orders

Darlington Borough Council has in place a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) covering dog control. This came into force on 1st February 2021. An amended order comes into effect on 1st February 2024. See below for details.

In public areas covered by the PSPO you may be required to:

  • keep your dog on a lead on specified land including East, North and West cemeteries
  • put your dog on a lead if you are told by a police officer, civic enforcement officer, park ranger or someone from the council
  • stop your dog going onto land from which they are excluded such as parts of a park or a children's play area
  • clear up after your dog

Penalties

If you ignore a PSPO you can be fined a £100 fixed penalty notice or up to £1,000 if it goes to court.

Please see the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) below for more details and the maps for the dog controlled areas in Darlington.

If you have clean blankets and towels you do not need we can use them to make bedding for stray dogs.

This helps us to keep them warm while they are in our care.

You can drop them off at:

Block D,
rear of the Town Hall
Feethams
Darlington
DL1 5QT

Unfortunately we cannot accept duvets, sheets or clothing.

You can also make food donations at the same address or at:

  • ASDA on Whinbush Way
  • Sainsburys on Victoria Road

The food we collect goes to Kings Church food bank in Darlington.

They help people who have a dog and are finding it difficult to feed them.
