Digital Envelope – Paperless Billing
Darlington Borough Council now offers a new way to receive your business rates bill and certain notices called Digital Envelope.
How it works
- Instead of receiving bills by post or logging into the council website, bills will be sent directly to your email address.
- Each time a bill is issued, you’ll receive an email with the document attached
- No login, no password, no waiting for post.
How to register for Digital Envelope
Registration is quick, safe, and secure. You’ll need to provide:
- Your name/organisation name name
- Business Rates Reference Number (11 digits starting with 600, found on previous bills or notices)
- Property postcode
- Your email address

Already registered for Paperless Billing?
If you have previously registered for paperless billing through your Business Rate Online account, we will now send your bills using our Digital Envelope service. You do not need to register again.
Business Rate Online
In addition to Digital Envelope, you can still register for a Business Rate Online account. With Business Rate Online you can:
- Sign up to Digital Envelope – paperless billing
- View online copies of your Business Rate bills
- See any due and paid payments (payments show the working day after they are received by us)
- View discounts, exemptions, and reliefs on your account
- View council tax band or rateable values
- Sign up to Direct Debit
