Customer Notice

We would like to provide customers with an update on some proposals about the Dolphin Centre that are due to go to Cabinet for consideration in December 2019.

As you may recall the plans to move the Library into the Dolphin Centre were originally going to impact squash provision as the space was required to facilitate the Library.  Although the Library is not now moving, there has been some further work taking place to look at how Darlington Borough Council can engage more residents - and in particular young people - into its facilities.  Recent consultation has suggested strong support from residents for the development of a ten pin bowling alley within the town centre.

The proposal therefore is to install a 5 lane Bowling Alley into the Dolphin Centre to open late 2020.  The positioning of the alley will be in the location of the existing squash courts. Sadly, this means there will no longer be squash provision available on site.

The Council has consulted with Darlington Squash Club which is based on Yarm Road and currently operate 4 squash courts.  The discussions have focused on ensuring there are still options for people to continue playing squash in Darlington.  Darlington Squash Club has confirmed that they would be delighted to invite squash players to use the Yarm Road facilities.  The club is membership based and the following is payable annually each April.

  • Adult £65
  • Junior £15
  • Family (2 adult + 2 junior) £95
  • OAP/Full time Student £35

There is a charge of £3.50 per person each time you play.

Reductions are available for new joiners partway through the year and the club also offers discounts for prompt renewals.  Attached is a link to the website where full details can be provided www.darlingtonsquashclub.co.uk

Alternatively, if customers are looking to maintain casual access to squash this can be done using several leisure centres in the area the closest of which is the Oakleaf Leisure Centre based in Newton Aycliffe.

For details please visit www.great-aycliffe.gov.uk/oakleafsportscomplex/home-sports/

We appreciate this may be disappointing news for squash players but unfortunately the decline in squash usage has continued in recent years and is now down to courts being used for just 18% of the opening times on a weekday and 13% on a weekend.  This is a national trend reported by Sport England and has necessitated the need for the Council to look at alternative ways to utilise this space and encourage greater usage at the Dolphin Centre.

If you would like any further information, please email [email protected] or speak to a member of the team.
