What is the Sainsbury’s School Games?
The Sainsbury’s School Games is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country enjoying the benefits of competitive school sport throughout the year.
The Games are made up of three levels of activity: competition within schools, competition between schools and competition at a regional or county level.
The Sainsbury’s School Games programme has four core aims:
Participation – to encourage participation in School Games competition and increase the numbers of young people taking part in competition
Competition for All – to develop competitive opportunities for all regardless of ability and including the least active
Clubs – increase regular participation in club sport, increase links to local clubs and involve the least active in Change 4 Life clubs
Workforce – broaden participation opportunities through volunteering and leadership programmes
The School Games team are working with various partners and schools to develop their provision for less active, non-sporty or unconfident young people to encourage them to increase their physical activity levels and show the advantages of healthy eating choices.
These clubs may run in or out of the curriculum, at breakfast clubs, lunchtimes or after school and take a variety of formats and structures. We are working to establish and support existing Change for Life Clubs in Primary Schools and also with Sports Leaders UK to develop more Energy Clubs and delivering the Playmaker Award across primary schools in the town.
The Darlington School Games Sports Hall Athletics event has been taking place at the Dolphin Centre throughout November – in total three qualifying events were delivered engaging 15 primary schools, over 250 children and more than 50 volunteers. The qualifying events lead to a final, where the top teams are invited to compete against one another – this will take place in January at the Dolphin Centre.
