Young People Move More this Summer in Darlington
21 August 2020

More than sixty youngsters from across Darlington enjoyed an active week of cricket, football, rounders and much more thanks to a programme funded by Darlington Borough Council and delivered by Martin Gray Football Academy.

The Holiday Enrichment Programme saw youngsters from different primary schools come together to become more active, enjoy professional level coaching in a range of sports and have fun during their summer break. Each child was provided with a healthy lunch every day and received a free sports shirt sponsored by Darlington-based business mysportswear.

The week also gave the children access to the state of the art facilities at Eastbourne Sports Complex including the 3G all-weather pitch, athletics track and fields and pitches. The event was part of a wider project across schools called In2 which gives young people access to sport and activities throughout the school year.

Councillor Kevin Nicholson, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for health and housing, said:
“Covid-19 hasn’t just impacted the economy, it has also limited access to sport and leisure facilities. This week has helped to support some of the town’s young people to stay active during the holidays. Through our partnership working with the Martin Gray Football Academy we have delivered a quality experience for young people in what have been challenging circumstances”

Martin Gray Academy Director added: “The coaching team has done an outstanding job. Safety is our number one priority and they have worked hard to ensure public health guidance is followed while providing high quality sessions, which are fun and engaging.

“It has been a pleasure to provide this opportunity in what has been a challenging time for the young people over the last five months. I would also like to thank Darlington Borough Council for the hard work that they have put into re-opening Eastbourne Sports Complex facility.”

Theresa Mason, Director at mysportswear, said:

“We are delighted to help. Sport can play an important role in a young person’s development and the T-shirts we’ve provided will give the youngsters something to remind them of their great week.

“We are a local Darlington business, and were happy to be involved in helping young people get active during the summer holidays.”
