Council Tax Support Fund 2023-24

The Government has announced £100 million of additional funding for local authorities to support the most vulnerable households in England. This funding allows local authorities to deliver additional support to households already receiving Council Tax Support.

Recognising the impact of rising bills, the government expects local authorities to fund further reductions in Council Tax bills of current Working Age and Pension Age customers, receiving Council Tax Support, with an outstanding Council Tax liability  for the financial year 2023-24.

A discount of up to £25 will be applied to Council Tax bills, for those in receipt of Council Tax Support on the 1 April 2023.

  • Where the amount of Council Tax to pay, following the application of Council Tax Support is more than £25, then the full £25 discount will be applied to the bill.
  • Where the amount of Council Tax to pay, following the application of Council Tax Support is less than £25, then the amount to pay would reduce to Nil.
  • Where there is no Council Tax to pay following the application of Council Tax Support, no reduction to the Council Tax bill will be available and those bills will not be credited.

An example of how this discount will appear on your Council Tax Bill is shown below:

2023/24 Support Fund                   01-APR-2023  31-Mar-2024                         -25.00

There is no requirement to make a separate application for a reduction under this scheme, as this will be automatically awarded and will show on the Council Tax bill.

This discount is being awarded by the Council using their discretionary powers under s13A(1)(c ) of the Local Government Act 2003.

The award of this discount cannot put your Council Tax bill into credit, therefore it may adjust accordingly during the year if you have a relevant change in your entitlement to Council Tax Support.
