This can NUT be ignored!

Officers sampled four takeaways in Darlington, to assess the presence of peanut allergens in meals, where peanuts were not declared or expected.

Of the four samples collected, two were found to contain traces of peanuts, indicating a risk to consumers with allergies.

In one case, the levels detected were minimal, in that 1% of people with an allergy to peanuts would have suffered a reaction. Officers worked with the business to improve their management of allergens.

The second business, where a more significant presence was identified, has been prevented from serving allergen free meals until they have completed allergen training and implement more robust controls.

Customers are advised to always declare any allergies when ordering.

Concerns or allergic reactions can be reported via the Northeast Allergic Reaction Notification System [external link]
